The Bust at the Intersection

Yesterday saw the unveiling of the Kate Chopin bust at the corner of Euclid and McPherson. I, of course, love her and her writing. When I first moved here, I went on a cemetery tour, and found myself overwhelmed and crying at her graveside. It was shocking.

When I got to the CWE early for work today, I took the time to take a look and have decided that the face of the sculpture is one of a person that I would love to see in conversation. Well, now I may have to dig out my copy of The Awakening and then peruse the collection of her complete novels and stories. sigh...

Started reading Night Train to Lisbon by Pascal Mercier. A classics teacher has an unexpected (as they all are) encounter with a beautiful Portuguese woman and finds himself taking the train to Lisbon and searching for the author of a book of short fragments written in the hope of describing a life. It is wondrous...

Wednesday night, the downtown store will host Lilly Ledbetter to talk about her memoir Grace and Grit: My Fight for Equal Pay and Fairness at Goodyear and Beyond. I'm a bit intimidated, to tell the truth. Her story is more than a story of someone who sued for justice and lost, only to find the fight carried on. It is also the story of people living their lives day to day, working and loving and keeping strong in the face of whatever life presents. Monumental changes happen slowly and in small steps, or they don't happen at all.
